We’ve all been there. Heartbroken and feeling empty but there’s light at the end of the tunnel, even if you don’t realise it just yet. Whether we realise it or not, listening to some power ballads, kick ass raps or screamo rock/metal is the sure fire cure for any a broken heart. If nothing else, it’ll make you feel better in the long term (OK, we admit it- it might make you feel worse in the short term as you have a little cry, punch the wall or go out for a much needed spin in your car but you’ll get there in the end, trust us.)
Unfortunately for the most of us, break ups are unavoidable and inevitable, but in the depths of being down in the dumps, music can be your saviour!
"It Must Have Been Love" by Roxette
Most Heartbreaking Lyric: It must have been love, but it's over now. / It must have been good, but I lost it somehow / It must have been love, but it's over now. / From the moment we touched till the time had run out."
This one pulls at the heartstrings and signifies the end of a relationship. From here on in the only way is up!
“Somebody I Used To Know” by Gotye
Most Heartbreaking Lyric: "Well you said that we would still be friends / But I'll admit that I was glad that it was over."
In time, this could have been the best thing that happened to you. Yes, it might not feel like it at this moment in time but hold your head up high now. It’s time to pack your belongings up and get the hell out, so what are you waiting for?
"Love Takes Time" by Mariah Carey
Most Heartbreaking Lyric: "Couldn't see that I was blind to let you go? / I can't escape the pain inside / Cause love takes time / I don't wanna be here, I don't wanna be here alone."
Now this one is a golden oldie but it never fails to deliver! Good old Mariah is the queen of pop and even her label loved this one so much, they halted the release of her first album to include it. Love hurts but play this one loud and proud and soon enough you’ll feel like you are coming out the other side!
“Careless Whisper" by Wham! Feat. George Michael
Most Heartbreaking Lyric: "I should have known better than to cheat a friend / and waste a chance that I've been given. / So I'm never gonna dance again / the way I danced with you."
Ohhh George, who doesn’t love a bit of George Michael, even if you don’t admit it? The king of pop shot this unforgettable video in Miami and enjoyed larking about in hotels and a yacht until he finds himself all alone. But if George can survive heartache, so the heck can you! Chin up and stand tall- things WILL get better.
“Post Break-Up Sex” by The Vaccines
Most Heartbreaking Lyric: "Post break-up sex / That helps you forget your ex / What did you expect / From post break-up sex?"
Pay attention here- Justin Young explains why you shouldn't go there and it’s a good old piece of advice. As the saying goes- don’t let back, it’s not the way you’re heading. Take note guys and girls and move on. You’ll feel better for it in the long run.
“Stop Crying Your Heart Out” by Oasis
Most Heartbreaking Lyric: "Take what you need / And be on your way / And stop crying your heart out."
Like them or loathe them, Oasis really do speak a huge dollop of reality. In this old school hit, Liam delivers some sobering advice, who sure knows a thing or two about a break-up! Don’t make the same mistake and listen carefully all.
"Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinead O'Connor
Most Heartbreaking Lyric: "It's been so lonely without you here / Like a bird without a song. / Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling. / Tell me baby, where did I go wrong?"
Written by Prince (RIP to the legend himself) this massive hit shows the reality of a breakup. In the video to this classic song, a closeup on Sinéad O'Connor's face and her different stages of sadness and even anger as she sings the lyrics cuts where it hurts. Her tears were real and it makes the whole song million times more poignant than we could ever imagine. This one is bound to make you cry your heart out, but hell....isn’t that the point? Let it all out and you’ll feel x10 better. If not now, it won’t be too long, we promise!
“Boys Don't Cry” - The Cure
Most Heartbreaking Lyric: "I would say I'm sorry / If I thought that it would change your mind."
Hmmmm...we’ve probably all been here before. When you read these lyrics or hear them blaring out of your stereo, you say the same phrase ‘Yeah, but it won't will it?’ With this in mind, it’s best to just get over it (however hard that maybe at this crappy moment in time!)
“Dry Your Eyes”- The Streets
Most Heartbreaking Lyric: "Dry your eyes mate, / I know it’s hard to take but her mind has been made up, / There’s plenty more fish in the sea."
Remember Mike Skinner at the height of the The Street- how can we forget? Here, when the tough gets going, Mike Skinner really is the best mate you could ever have! Listen to his wise words, brush yourself off and get back in the world of the living. One only get one life, so make it count!
“Best Of You” - Foo Fighters
Most Heartbreaking Lyric: "I've got another confession my friend, / I'm no fool, / I'm getting tired of starting again, / Somewhere new."
Big Dave has finally had enough. And sure, we know that feeling. Perhaps it's fitting that, far from being the motivational anthem of grunge that some people would consider it, this fabulous song is really about a bitter breakup. The line "is someone getting the best of you?" most probably refers to an ex having it off with other people, which to be fair, is plain crappy.
“Back To Black” by Amy Winehouse
Most Heartbreaking Lyric: "You went back to what you knew / So far removed from all that we went through / And I tread a troubled track / My odds are stacked / I'll go back to black."
This absolute legend needs little introduction or explanation. The queen of the "troubled track" with one of her finest songs sings her heart and soul out. There’s no denying that you can genuinely feel her ever bitter pain. Tragically, London’s bright little gem will stay forever young in a horrible twist of fate.
